Microneedling does make a real difference for the right concerns, but slowly. After one session most people see brighter, smoother looking skin within a week or two; after a course of three to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, texture, pores, fine lines and many acne scars look noticeably better. The best results continue to develop for months after your last treatment.

That is the short answer. The rest of this guide is what I explain to clients in my Dunstable clinic before they book, including the parts most "before and after" pages leave out.

Does Microneedling Really Make a Difference?

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses very fine needles to make thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the skin. Your skin treats these as small injuries and repairs itself, producing new collagen and elastin as it does. That repair process is where the benefits come from:

  • Smoother texture and a more even surface
  • Softer looking acne scars, particularly rolling and boxcar scars
  • Pores that look smaller
  • Fine lines and crepey skin that look less obvious
  • A brighter, healthier glow

You can read more about how I carry out the treatment on my microneedling in Dunstable page.

What Are the Different Types of Microneedling?

Type What it is Notes
Home dermaroller A handheld roller with short needles Very superficial; hygiene and technique are hard to control at home
Professional pen microneedling An automated pen with adjustable needle depth, used in clinic The standard clinic treatment for texture, pores and scars
Nanoneedling Very shallow, almost surface level Gentle glow and product absorption, minimal downtime
RF microneedling (for example Morpheus8) Needles that also deliver radiofrequency heat More downtime; I do not offer RF treatments

If you are comparing RF microneedling with HIFU for lifting, my HIFU vs Morpheus8 guide sets out the differences.

Microneedling Results: A Session by Session Timeline

This is a typical pattern, not a promise. Your skin, your concern and the depth used all change the picture.

Stage What you are likely to notice
Straight after Pink or red, like mild sunburn, warm and tight
Day 2 to 3 Redness mostly settled, skin may feel dry, rough or slightly flaky
Week 1 to 2 A fresher, brighter look as the surface renews
After session 1 (week 4 to 6) Slightly smoother texture; scars largely unchanged yet
After session 3 Texture and pores clearly improved for many people; scars starting to soften
After session 4 to 6 The most visible change in acne scarring and fine lines
3 to 6 months after the course Collagen keeps maturing, so results often keep improving

How Will I Look 2 Days After Microneedling?

Usually a little pink, possibly patchy, with skin that feels tight or dry. Some people have mild flaking or a few small spots. Most of my clients feel comfortable going about their day by day two, and light mineral makeup is usually fine from then. My microneedling aftercare guide goes through each day in detail.

How Many Microneedling Sessions Will You Need?

Concern Typical course
Dullness and glow 1 to 3 sessions
Texture and enlarged pores 3 sessions
Fine lines and crepey skin 3 to 6 sessions
Acne scarring 4 to 6 sessions, sometimes more

After a course, many people keep their results with a maintenance session every few months.

Microneedling Before and After for Acne Scars

Acne scars are where the before and after difference can be most rewarding, and also where patience matters most. Rolling and boxcar scars tend to respond better than deep, narrow icepick scars, which may need other approaches. Scars soften rather than vanish. Microneedling should not be done over active, inflamed acne; if your acne is still severe, please see your GP or a dermatologist first. My acne scar treatment guide covers the options in more depth.

Microneedling Before and After for Wrinkles

Fine lines around the eyes and cheeks, and crepey texture, can look softer after a course. Deep folds and loose skin are a different matter. Microneedling improves the skin; it does not lift tissue.

What Before and After Photos Can and Cannot Show

Photos are useful, but they are easy to flatter. When you look at any clinic's pictures, including mine, it helps to know:

  • Lighting changes everything. Overhead light deepens scars; soft, front facing light hides them. Genuine comparisons use the same light, angle and distance.
  • Makeup, filters and skincare. A fresh moisturiser or a little glow can look like a result.
  • Timing. A photo taken two days after treatment may show swelling that temporarily plumps lines. Fair "after" photos are taken weeks after the course ends.
  • How many sessions. Many striking photos show six or more treatments, sometimes over a year or more.
  • What photos cannot show. How your skin feels, how makeup sits, and small changes in texture are often more noticeable in person than on a phone screen.

The honest test is whether a clinic will tell you what is realistic for your own skin, not someone else's.

What Is the Downside to Microneedling?

The main downsides are time and a few days of looking pink. Common, short lived side effects include:

  • Redness for 24 to 72 hours
  • Tightness, dryness and mild flaking
  • Pinpoint bleeding during treatment
  • Small, temporary breakouts

Less common risks include infection, a cold sore flare in people prone to them, and pigment changes, which is why good aftercare and daily SPF matter. Microneedling is not suitable over active acne, open wounds, active infections or certain skin conditions, and I will go through your medical history first.

Is Microneedling Worth It?

For most people with texture, pores, mild to moderate scarring or early fine lines, yes, if they are happy to commit to a course and protect their skin from the sun. It is less worthwhile if you want a lift, have a deep icepick scar as your main concern, or want instant results for an event next week.

It suits you if you want gradual, natural looking improvement in skin quality and can allow a couple of pink days per session.

It may not suit you if your main concern is sagging, you have active acne, or you prefer no downtime at all. A needle-free option such as PRX-T33 or a chemical peel may suit better, and for lifting, HIFU before and after explains what that treatment can do.

Clients visit from Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Luton and across Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Current prices are on my treatments page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you see results after 1 microneedling treatment?

Usually you will see a brighter, fresher look within a week or two of one session, and some people notice slightly finer texture. Deeper changes to scars, pores and fine lines come from collagen that builds over months, so a single treatment is a starting point rather than the full result.

Is 3 sessions of microneedling worth it?

For general texture, dullness and mildly enlarged pores, three sessions is often enough to see a clear, worthwhile difference. Acne scarring and deeper lines usually need more, often four to six or beyond. I will tell you honestly at consultation whether three is likely to be enough for your concern.

Is 40 or 50 too old for microneedling?

No. Microneedling is suitable for most adults in their 40s, 50s and beyond. Collagen production slows with age, so results may build a little more slowly and maintenance matters more, but texture, fine lines and skin quality can still improve. It will not lift sagging skin, which is a different job.

Does microneedling help wrinkles?

It can soften fine lines and crepey texture over a course of treatments, because it encourages new collagen in the skin. It is less effective on deep folds or expression lines, and it does not lift. For jowls or a loose jawline, a lifting treatment such as HIFU is usually a better match.

How far apart should microneedling sessions be?

Most courses are spaced around four to six weeks apart. That gives your skin time to heal fully and lay down new collagen before the next session. Booking closer together does not speed results up and can irritate the skin.

Is microneedling just as good as Botox?

They do different jobs. Botox relaxes the muscles that cause expression lines, while microneedling improves the skin itself: texture, scarring, pores and fine lines. I do not offer Botox or any injectables at Amina Beauty, so I can only advise on the skin treatments I provide.
