Why Aftercare Matters

Microneedling works by creating thousands of tiny channels in the skin. Your skin treats these as small injuries and responds by repairing itself, which is what encourages new collagen and smoother, fresher-looking skin. Those same channels also mean your skin is more open and sensitive for a short while afterwards. What you put on it, and what you expose it to, in the first few days really does matter.

In my clinic I go through aftercare with every client before they leave and give it to them in writing. Here is the same advice in one place.

The First 24 Hours

Straight after treatment your skin will usually look pink or red, a bit like mild sunburn. It may feel warm, tight and slightly tender. This is normal and is a sign your skin is responding.

During the first day:

  • Keep your hands off your face as much as possible, and make sure they are clean if you do need to touch it
  • Do not wear makeup for at least 24 hours
  • Cleanse gently in the evening with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, patting dry with a clean towel
  • Apply only what you have been advised to use, usually a simple, soothing serum or moisturiser
  • Avoid heavy exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and swimming pools
  • Sleep on a fresh pillowcase, and try to sleep on your back if you can

Some people notice a little pinpoint bleeding or clear fluid during or just after treatment. This settles quickly.

Days 2 and 3

By the second day most of the redness has usually calmed down, though some people stay a little pink for up to 72 hours. Your skin may feel dry, tight or rough to the touch, and you may notice some mild flaking. Again, this is normal.

During this stage:

  • Keep moisturising with a gentle, hydrating product
  • Start using SPF every day once you are outdoors, even on cloudy days, and keep it up
  • Light makeup is usually fine from day 2, ideally mineral makeup applied with clean brushes
  • Do not pick or scrub at any flaking skin, let it come away on its own
  • Keep avoiding actives such as retinol, vitamin C serums, AHAs and BHAs

You can usually go back to light exercise around this point, but avoid anything that leaves you very hot and sweaty for another day or so.

The Rest of the First Week

From around day 4 your skin should look and feel close to normal. Any remaining dryness or flaking should be easing off.

  • Reintroduce your usual skincare slowly. Most people are advised to wait several days, often around five to seven, before using retinol, AHAs or BHAs again. Bring them back one at a time.
  • Continue daily SPF. Freshly treated skin can be more sensitive to the sun, and sun exposure can undo some of the good work.
  • Avoid sunbeds and deliberate tanning for at least two weeks.
  • Hold off on other facial treatments, such as waxing, peels or laser, until we have discussed it.

What Is Normal

  • Redness for 24 to 72 hours
  • Warmth, tightness and mild tenderness
  • Dry or slightly rough skin
  • Mild flaking in the first few days
  • Small, temporary breakouts in some people

When to Contact the Clinic

Please get in touch with me, or seek medical advice if it is urgent, if you notice:

  • Redness or swelling that is getting worse after the first two to three days
  • Heat, pus, crusting or increasing pain, which could suggest infection
  • Blistering or a rash
  • A cold sore flare-up, especially if you are prone to them
  • Anything that is worrying you, however small

I would always rather hear from you early. Most questions are quick to answer, and it puts your mind at rest.

How Results Develop

People often expect to see the final result straight away. In reality, your skin may look brighter and plumper within a week or so, but the deeper changes from new collagen build gradually over the following weeks and months.

Many people have a course of around three to six sessions, spaced roughly four to six weeks apart. Concerns like acne scarring often need more sessions than general texture or dullness. When you look at "microneedling before and after" photos, remember that they usually show the result of a full course, not a single session, and that everyone's skin is different. I will always be honest with you about what is realistic. My microneedling before and after guide shows how results build, session by session.

Frequently Asked Questions

What shouldn't you do after microneedling?

For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid makeup, heavy exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, swimming and touching your face. For about a week, avoid retinol, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C serums and scrubs, and do not pick at flaking skin. Avoid sunbeds and deliberate tanning for at least two weeks, and wear SPF every day.

What will my face look like 2 days after microneedling?

Usually a little pink or patchy, with skin that feels tight, dry or slightly rough. Some people have mild flaking or a few small spots. Most of the redness has normally settled by day two, and light mineral makeup is usually fine from then.

What is the best thing to apply after microneedling?

Only what your practitioner has advised, usually a simple, fragrance-free, soothing serum or moisturiser, such as one based on hyaluronic acid. Keep it gentle and avoid actives for several days. Once you are outdoors, a broad-spectrum SPF every day is the most important product of all.

Do I have to wait 24 hours to wash my face after microneedling?

Not usually. I advise leaving your skin alone for the first few hours, then cleansing gently that evening with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, patting dry with a clean towel. Avoid hot water, scrubs, cleansing brushes and rubbing. Always follow the specific advice you were given after your treatment.

Is 2 sessions of microneedling enough?

Two sessions can give a brighter look and a little smoother texture, but most concerns need more. Many people have a course of around three to six sessions, spaced roughly four to six weeks apart, and acne scarring often needs more than general texture or glow. I will suggest a plan at your consultation.

When can I wear makeup after microneedling?

Wait at least 24 hours. The tiny channels in your skin need time to close, and makeup applied too soon can cause irritation or breakouts. When you do go back to makeup, use clean brushes or sponges.
