The Short Answer
Yes, a double chin can often be improved without surgery. If yours is mild to moderate and comes mostly from softening skin with a modest amount of fat, HIFU can tighten the area and reduce some fullness over two to three months. If it is mainly a larger volume of fat, treatments that target fat directly, or liposuction, are likely to do more, and I will tell you that at consultation.
What Causes a Double Chin?
The fullness under your chin, called submental fullness, rarely has a single cause. Most people have a mix of these:
- Genetics. Some people inherit a tendency to store fat under the chin, or a jaw and chin shape that gives less definition. This is why slim people can still have a double chin.
- Weight. The area under the chin is often one of the first places fat settles and one of the last places it leaves.
- Skin laxity. From our mid twenties we make less collagen and elastin. The skin and the thin platysma muscle beneath it loosen, and the angle between chin and neck softens.
- Posture. Looking down at phones pushes soft tissue forward, and a forward head position can create a double chin in photos even with very little fat.

Injections and fat freezing reduce fat but do not tighten skin, so on already loose skin they can leave the area looking softer. Liposuction gives the most definite fat reduction, but it is surgery, with the risks, recovery and cost that brings. Exercises will not spot reduce fat, though better posture can change your profile.

What HIFU Can and Cannot Do for a Double Chin
HIFU, or high-intensity focused ultrasound, delivers energy to set depths beneath the skin without breaking the surface.
